writer, editor, gardener
My journalism has appeared in the Associated Press, U.S. News & World Report, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and elsewhere.
As Senior Editor for Nonprofit Intelligence at the Chronicle of Philanthropy, I produce live journalism on philanthropy topics and write reports on nonprofit trends. I also produce the Chronicle’s flagship podcast, Nonprofits Now: Leading Today, which spotlights leaders using innovative solutions to tackle challenges from hiring and retention to polarization on staffs. Previously, I reported news and features for the magazine. Prior to joining the Chronicle, I coordinated a podcasting bootcamp at WAMU 88.5; edited news and features for DCist; and edited policy research for the Center for American Progress.
I write freelance about ecology, horticulture, and nature. I am the author of Right Plant, Right Place, a newsletter about the growing year at my tiny community garden plot. As a nonfiction reader for Smoky Blue Literary Arts Magazine, I review submissions for publication. I’m also at work on my first novel. An enthusiastic hobbyist, I enjoy distance running, reading fiction, birding, hiking, and trying new recipes with my cookbook club.
